Oh dear…

Cylinder 1 is scored…
Diagnosis?: We suspect that due to the high average rpm the stock pump has been moving too much oil and although we’ve never had a starvation problem in the sump the oil has been collecting in the head and not draining away quick enough. This has caused excessive blow-by in the rocker cover breather pipe that returns to the intake after the turbo. Noticing the oil collecting in the intercooler, we had previously added a catch can to this system but it didn’t address the cause, just the symptom. Fail.
As this oil became blown up into the plenum the first inlet it would trickle down is cylinder 1. All this oil dropping directly into the combustion chamber has caused excessive carbon buildup, some of which we think has been scraped by the rings and caused the scoring. The other cylinders are looking pretty healthly and consistent.

The seriousness of the problem was confirmed when the engine was inverted on the engine stand and after some time oil managed to drain past the #1 rings but no others. More scary pics to follow.
