Trackday #1 (1’14”.17 – short track)

Our first track day was a shit load of fun… it seemed surreal to have someone wave you onto a race track to let loose in your own car… with your best mate beside you!?

This was actually a club meet or “Sprints” organised through SAU using the Winton Short track. We spent the majority of the day laughing uncontrollably whilst trying to stay on the crappy stock seat and learn the track. We knew immediately that our first priority would be to get a race seat installed that was fixed back, light weight and allowed us to use our arms to steer (not hold us in place) and our back, butt and legs to feel what the car was doing. Before we spend any serious money on performance upgrades we need to ensure the car is running cooler and under less stress and that we can better feel what dynamics are at play the handling.

The car was very soft and generally pretty mushy – when it wasn’t suffering from mid corner understeer, it was oversteering (turn-in and power oversteer)… We tried two sets of tyres and also a rotation front to rear and eventually found a setup that wasn’t terrible!

Further pit notes:

  1. Oil filter too hot (90°C after 5-6 laps)
  2. Brakes too hot, wearing and fading badly
  3. Tires over temping, try lower pressures with new set
  4. We ran 38psi cold, 40-42psi running pressure!! (Whoops)
  5. Oil in Intercooler – need catch-can
  6. Lock Bar a must, uber gay would be a compliment to the handling
  7. Don’t worry about the weight of the car so much anymore 😉 woohoo!!!!
  8. Cling wrap driver to seat, sans limbs.
