About

WHY? Project Awesome was born in 2009 by two guys with a simple dream. To engage ourselves in motorsport cost-effectively.

HOW? We both wanted to do this in a FR (front engined / RWD) car that had a great fundamental handling characteristic, lots of aftermarket parts and a race pedigree.

WHAT? We settled upon using a 1993 Nissan Skyline R33 GTS-T Series 1 as our track car. Initially we were very focused on reducing as much weight as possible, ensuring we looked after the engine and drive train for reliability and for 2 years we did this whilst retaining the road-worthy status (- ok let’s make that “registered”). We had ambitions to join the IPRA series (http://www.ipravic.com.au/Tech_Info.html) but gradually as we poured more hours and sweat into the car and saw the results of that in reduced lap times we became less interested in the costs and risks of racing, and more and more addicted to time-attack…

We aren’t restricted to any particular regulations, we do all the work we possibly can ourselves.

We don’t care how the car looks – anything and everything we do MUST have a beneficial effect to the reliability and pace of the car.

As you’ll see here in this blog, we’re just a couple of guys that despite never having had any formal mechanical or motorsport training, qualifications or experience – we’re just charging ahead, researching as much as possible, being as practical as possible and chasing those seconds and tenths at the track.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously, as you’ll gather from the Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights references littered throughout the blog (including its title), but we do sincerely hope that this blog finds some use to those with similar ambitions and interests.

    1. Hey Ben, glad you touched base. You are exactly the reason for the blog in the first place! Tell me more about your project? For us there’s far too much garage time and not enough track time of late, but we’re almost down with the new engine!
      Marty.
